The Champions – West Indies

In Cricket, Sports, World cup on October 8, 2012 at 12:13 am

It was a long wait… Longer than one could have waited… The last time West indies team had any cup under their belt was the World cup of cricket for consecutive years… But after that followed barren patch which continued for long 28 years. By this time the world saw emergence of super cricketers from the carribeans but they could not bring the cup.

This day the world celebrates in their victory over mighty Sri Lankans.

T20 matches is and will always be known for batting prowess but today in the finals of World T 20, 2012, it was bowlers delight. In  Semifinals Gayle Force caught Aussies off guard but the same could not work in front of lanka. They had their strategy for Gayle-Pollard duo. But this time Samuel did good for the team and the same team which posted highest total of the tournament could score meagre 140s. Sri Lankans had already defeated them in league matches where caribbeans had scored 129. So this time was not difficult as Mahela would have supposed, But Darren had altogether different ball game this time. His bowler armoury was also in full force and they wrapped the Lankans for 101 in less than 20 overs.

Gangnam stylists West Indies roused memories of a more natural time as they sank Sri Lanka by 36 runs in a battle between islands to win the ICC World Twenty20 – their first world title in over three decades. Darren Sammy’s side of booty-shaking league mercenaries pulled off a massive upset at the R. Premadasa on Sunday night as a shell-shocked home crowd watched its vaunted batting line-up come unmoored against inspired West Indian bowling and fielding. Lanka lost their last nine wickets for 53 runs as the chase ended in the 19th over.

Samuel was adjudged man of the match for his fearless approach in the first innings when wickets continued to faal as pack of cards around him.  He scored 78 of 56 balls.

Aussie Shane Watson was adjudged man of the Series.

Standing Umpire Simon Taufel saw his last match as the umpire.

Waiting for Ton !

The hundred ton is still a dream for crores of Indian fans. It’s not that he legend doesn’t want another record in his name but fate gave him another miss this time. The first inning was disaster for each batsmen in the Indian side. But the second inning was disaster for sachin ramesh tendulkar. The way he was judged Leg before wicket has again raised doubt on the decision-making of the umpires.  However the dubious decisions have long been chasing Sachin in particular. There have been several occasion when he has faced similar situation and like a gentleman he had gladly accepted the wrong decisions.

The question  “man versus machine” has come again on the forefront. TV replay clearly showed that the ball was leaving leg stump but the umpire thought otherwise. Sachin was clearly aggrieved with the decision but the gentleman, he is, left the field accepting the decision of the umpire.

Use of technology and the decision-making in the game of cricket has been a long pending issue. The innovative use of technology had been greatly welcome in T-20 matches. lets See how long does it takes to be adopted in Classical cricket.

Indian team as usual has been performing badly at foreign pitches. Alas this time “The Wall” & the ‘Very very Special” has been lax this time. The new test caps like Virat kohli has been disappointing.  This 3rd test match between India & Australia is tilted in Aussies favour until unless any miracle happens.

Sleep tight!!!

The World awaits for this moment – the clash of Titans. Barely is there any other worthwhile matches like Indo-Pak match (save for Ashes). For the love and hatred that exist between the two neighbours, it’s the cricket which is next to the fight at border for the citizenry of India and Pakistan. Even God is busy watching the titans’ firepower.

In this tournament, both teams have shown their stamina and power. India after few hiccups turned punters on the flight back to Australia. While Pakistan has proved time and against in this series that despite loosing their pace bowlers, they still can give a tough fight to any teams . And here they both are for once in a time affair match. However, going by the statistics, India has always overpowered Pakistan in world cup matches. But this time, it is different. India is suffering from lack of strike bowlers and their ability to lose wickets in short intervals can cost them dear. Pakistan has done extremely well in their bowling department.

And when the two lions have are due for Semifinal clash, God has its own plan. It’s raining cats and dogs in Mohali tonight. Media has gone crazy, as if it’s not a torrential rain but some terrorist attack.

People in both the countries shall have sleepless nights. Early morning many atheist shall pray for the first time for their country to win (as if it were some  confrontation at border).

That’s Mohali cricket ground for you.

My advice to the fellow countrymen and our neighbors, “Sleep tight for the post match session shall be full of tension.”

Good Night

Another Conspiracy Theory

In Crazy4, Cricket, World cup on February 25, 2011 at 11:27 pm

This edition of world cup seems to be a different ball game. There are teams like Bangladesh who are scoring around 300 runs against strong team, India and there are some teams who are known fighter but they fell like pack of cards.

Yes, I am referring to today’s match between Australia and arch rival New Zealand. Kangaroo-Kiwi matches are same as Indo-pak matches … same temper, same ferociousness and what not. But the way, kiwis played against kangaroos today, it was pathetic, like they were some third grade teams participating for the first time in the world cup. I can’t take this as One bad day, No. It can’t be possible on any bad day that all of the top class players in your team.. Sachin Shewaag Yuvraj Raina Virat pathan falter in one match. Look at the scorecard and you will be surprised to find that top 6 kiwi batsmen scored just around 100 runs in some 20 overs. That is not how a bad day is defined.

Another theory of mine. Australian side knows, this time it’s hard for them to secure place into finals. So what they are doing is, setting with all teams playing against them. So that they can make sure their berth in Finals, Poor punter….
